It is important to get your body off the ground as it will sap heat and likely not be very soft or smooth. There are air pads that need to be blown up, self-inflating pads that automatically fill with air, and closed-cell foam pads that just need to be unrolled or unfolded. Durability tends to go up from air padded to closed-cell while insulation and price tends to go down. This does vary by model and brand. One way to enhance your pad on a colder night or accomodate someone who is more sensitive to cold is to add a thick blanket. They tend to be more effective layered between your sleeping bag and the ground rather than on top of your sleeping bag.
